Rosie's Vet Visit

Rosie had a big morning today, having to go to the vet for a check up so that her flea treatment could be prescribed again.

Normally we carry her by hand in her cat carrier. However, today we attached the carrier to a bicycle and rolled it to the vet.

The result was a less stressed Rosie (as the carrier was higher up than when being carried by hand, and the journey less bumpy) and less stressed human staff!

Kaspar The Savoy Cat

The Savoy, when 13 sit down to dine, will place a 14th chair at the table occupied by Kaspar a black cat sculpted out of wood resplendent with a white napkin tied around his neck..

The Spectator reports that Winston Churchill became so fond of Kaspar that he had him at his table no matter how many guests were present. The cat briefly left the hotel during the second world war, courtesy of officers from the RAF’s 609 Squadron, who — having dined rather too liquidly — managed to smuggle him away. Kaspar lived for a while at their HQ in Lincolnshire, only returning to the Savoy after the intervention of an air commodore.

Parties of 13 can dine with the cat to this day, and he’s become something of a hotel mascot. Huge topiary versions of him stand outside the entrance, the River Restaurant has been renamed in his honour and even the Savoy’s cappuccinos are topped with his outline in chocolate.

Happy Winston Churchill Day

On April 9th in 1963, Winston Churchill became the second person to become an Honorary Citizen of the United States, although this was the first time Congress had resolved that it was to be bestowed by the President of the United States, on a foreign national – he was granted citizenship of eight individual states as a prelude :- Hawaii, Maryland, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia. Winston Churchill Day commemorates this event.

This honour was bestowed upon him by the 35th President of the United States – John F Kennedy, although Churchill was not present himself at the ceremony, his son and grandson were there for him. It had been hoped Churchill would not only witness the event on television – which he did with his wife – but would be able to respond. Problems with a relay station in Cornwall prevented this.

Catcoin

The Royal Mint is bolstering the coin collection it issued last year to mark the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter's birth with a special UK release featuring Peter Rabbit followed by Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten and Jeremy Fisher.

The printed colour designs on the silver proof 50p coins have been created to capture the hand-painted style of Potter's original illustrations.

Cats Prefer Humans To Food

The Telegraph reports that new research from Oregon State University, published on Friday in Behavioural Processes, concludes that cats enjoy human contact more than eating.

Dispelling the rumour that cats are antisocial and the only love they show is cupboard love, they subjected cats to a series of tests to prove what they choose in different situations.

The researchers took 50 cats from shelters and peoples homes and deprived them of food, human contact, scent and toys for a few hours.

They then introduced them to stimuli within these four categories to see what they chose.

Most cats chose human socialisation over any of the other categories.

The authors of the study wrote:
"While it has been suggested that cat sociality exists on a continuum, perhaps skewed toward independency, we have found that 50% of cats tested preferred interaction with the social stimulus even though they had a direct choice between social interaction with a human and their other most preferred stimuli from the three other stimulus categories."
Hmm, I must tell Rosie this!

RIP Ron Ayres of Lost Cats Brighton

RIP Ron, many cats owe their lives to you, and many "staff" owe their happiness (be it from finding lost cats or re-homing a cat to a loving home) to you.

As per their Facebook page:
"Lost Cats Brighton are incredibly sad to announce that Ron Ayres, founder of the charity, passed away peacefully yesterday evening, aged 78. Ron was at home, with his family, and of course his much-loved cats.
Ron's total dedication to the lost, stray and unwanted cats in the city, prevailed to the very end, and despite being unwell with cancer for some time, Ron continued to be actively involved in the running of the shelter. His indomitable spirit, his passion and his tireless efforts, have been an incredible inspiration and source of comfort and support, for many people.

A small independent organisation, which has run entirely from Ron's rented bungalow in Portslade, began life as a ‘Lost & Found’ list to help reunite cats with their owners, and gradually grew to become one of Brighton’s busiest shelters.

Reliant entirely on a dedicated team of volunteers, and on donations from supporters, Lost Cats Brighton has re-homed an average of almost 150-200 cats each year. An incredible achievement, driven forward with tremendous grit and determination by Ron.

As the author Mark Twain said, "When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction." Ron loved all the cats in his care dearly, and had friends and comrades aplenty.

Ron's zest for life, his no-nonsense approach, his courage and his humour, will leave a hole in the lives of so many.

It is not known exactly what lies ahead for Lost Cats Brighton, since its current premises will need to be vacated imminently, however the charity remains committed to continuing Ron's legacy. Many years of searching for viable new premises have so far proved unsuccessful, however, the search will continue. In the short-term Lost Cats Brighton will be concentrating on winding down the shelter on Valley Road in Portslade, and finding suitable homes for the remaining cats in care.

The trustees of the charity respectfully request at this time that people focus on Ron's memory, and celebrate his incredible achievements in helping Brighton & Hove's most vulnerable cats, during the past 17 years.
Anyone who is interested in rehoming or temporarily fostering a cat, should please contact them on 01273 422721.
