Cat Jumps To Safety From Burning Chicago Building

A Chicago cat has survived after jumping out of a fifth-floor window to escape an apartment fire.

Chicago Fire Department personnel were taking a video of the exterior of the building as firefighters were extinguishing the blaze when a black cat appeared through billowing smoke at a broken window. The feline briefly tested the side of the building with its front paws, and then jumped.

Onlookers gasped as the cat fell. But it missed a wall and instead landed on all four paws on a patch of grass, bounced once and ran away.

It went under my car and hid until she felt better after a couple of minutes and came out and tried to scale the wall to get back in,” said fire department spokesman Larry Langford.

The cat was not injured, Langford said, adding he was trying to track down its owner.

Catastrophe Averted as Cat Delays Train Departure

The tabby was spotted on an Avanti West Coast train at London Euston sitting atop the 125mph Pendolino service at 8.30pm last night before it was due to leave for Manchester at 9pm

A tabby cat was spotted last night on an Avanti West Coast train at London Euston sitting atop the 125mph Pendolino service at 8.30pm before it was due to leave for Manchester at 9pm.

Passengers were put on a replacement train as staff took the one the cat was on out of service to try and coax it down. It took them over two hours to coax him down.

It then 'swaggered off' with the air of having somewhere else to be.

It is not clear as to how the cat got up there in the first place.

Pumpkin The Tesco Cat Returns!

The BBC reports that a cat "banned" from entering his favourite supermarket is up to his old tricks and has been seen lounging on the self-service checkouts.

Ginger tom Pumpkin became an "unexpected item in the bagging area" of a Tesco branch near Norwich when he was spotted on the scanner on Sunday.

Almost 2,000 people follow the adventures of the mischievous moggy, who usually abides by the ban and stays outside the front door.

Tesco said it would encourage him out.

The six-year-old cat had been a regular in the Thorpe Marriott branch for well over a year before the shop took action last November, saying "although we love the little ginger cat who visits... a food store isn't the best place for a cat to be, so our colleagues gently encourage him to go out when he tries to come in".

However, on Sunday night Pumpkin the puss was back in his favourite place, relaxing on the self-serve scanner.

Kaspar The Savoy Cat

The Savoy, when 13 sit down to dine, will place a 14th chair at the table occupied by Kaspar a black cat sculpted out of wood resplendent with a white napkin tied around his neck..

The Spectator reports that Winston Churchill became so fond of Kaspar that he had him at his table no matter how many guests were present. The cat briefly left the hotel during the second world war, courtesy of officers from the RAF’s 609 Squadron, who — having dined rather too liquidly — managed to smuggle him away. Kaspar lived for a while at their HQ in Lincolnshire, only returning to the Savoy after the intervention of an air commodore.

Parties of 13 can dine with the cat to this day, and he’s become something of a hotel mascot. Huge topiary versions of him stand outside the entrance, the River Restaurant has been renamed in his honour and even the Savoy’s cappuccinos are topped with his outline in chocolate.
