Rosie's Disappearing Act

The arrival of the scaffolders yesterday triggered a disappearing cat act from Rosie.

Once all was quiet on the home front, Rosie could not be found anywhere; until she chose to be found.

Where was she?

Hiding underneath the stairs, in a small cupboard where the washing machine is housed.

When a cat wants to hide, it certainly does a good job!

Hodge - The Southwark Cathedral Cat

As per the Dean of Southwark:

"For the past couple of months Hodge has been getting acquainted with us and his new home. He has a voracious appetite both for food and love. He is either waiting for more food or rolling on to his back inviting tickles on his tummy. Leave the brocade vestments uncovered and he is immediately onto them enjoying the feel of expensive fabric! Everyone who comes in is immediately smitten; he is adorable."

Rosie's New Bed

For reasons that escape me, we have purchased and I have constructed, a new bed for Rosie (even though she has many places around the house that she likes to sleep).

At first she was a little reluctant.

Now she loves it!

Happy National Black Cat Day - #BlackCatDay

What is National Black Cat Day?

National Black Cat Day was created by Cats Protection on 27 October 2011 to help celebrate the majesty of monochrome moggies and beautiful black cats. When the campaign was launched, statistics revealed that black and black-and-white cats took, on average, seven days longer to find a home compared to cats of other colours.

Celebrating 10 years of Black Cat Day

Years later, we're still celebrating black cats in all their glory - although our campaigning has now paid off! Black and black-and-white cats now spend less time in our care than when we started promoting the campaign, resulting in thousands of happy cats and owners.

Each year, we get huge numbers of cat-lovers engaging with our #BlackCatDay hashtag on social media and best of all, we get to see how beloved black cats and black-and-white cats have made a real impression on their owner's lives.

2,000 Year-Old Cat Image Found In Peru

The figure of a relaxing cat has been discovered in the Nazca desert in Peru.

The Nazca lines, a Unesco World Heritage site, is home to designs on the ground - known as geoglyphs - created some 2,000 years ago.

Scientists believe the cat, as with other Nazca animal figures, was created by making depressions in the desert floor, leaving coloured earth exposed.

The cat then went unnoticed until plans were recently drawn up for a new path leading to an observation platform.

The platform would have provided a vantage point for visitors to see many of the other geoglyphs.

In a statement, Peru's culture ministry said:

"The figure was scarcely visible and was about to disappear, because it's situated on quite a steep slope that's prone to the effects of natural erosion."

It added that the geoglyph, which is about 37m (120ft) long, has been cleaned and conserved over the past week.

One of My Area's More Elderly Residents

She is a very friendly 17 year old, and is well cared for by loving human staff.

Elderly cats can look thin, and their fur can become sparse, but do not assume that they are neglected and don't have a loving home.

Larry at Number 10 - The Book

The Londoner reports that Larry the Downing Street cat is to be immortalised in children’s picture-book form.

The mouse-hunting moggy will star in Larry at Number 10 by Elizabeth Radcliffe, who tells us she’s been “a really big fan of Larry for a long time — he’s got such personality. When Dilyn [the No 10 dog] came on the scene I had an idea for the story... Larry gets his whiskers put out of joint.” The book, which is planned for later this year, will reveal all.

Keeping Your Cats Cool During Warm Weather

Helpful advice on keeping your cats cool during warm weather.

Keep your cat safe from the sun

Many cats love soaking up the sunshine, choosing the warmest spots in the garden to enjoy. Make sure you take precautions to avoid your cat getting dehydrated or sunburnt. Overexposure can lead to skin cancer.

Provide plenty of shade both inside and out. From sheltered plant pots to cardboard boxes, these items offer makeshift sunshades for outdoor-loving moggies.
Think about planting shrubs or using cat hides and boxes in the garden. These help your cat hide away from the sun’s potentially harmful rays.

If your cat has white fur, try keeping them inside between 10am and 3pm, when the sun is at its hottest. Speak to a vet about suitable sunscreen for cats, to ensure they don’t suffer from sunburn.

Keeping your cat cool

Keeping your cat cool inside your home is important too. Place fans around the house to keep the air circulating, remembering not to point the fan directly at your cat.

Another handy tip is to freeze a bottle of water, wrap it in a towel or pillowcase and place it somewhere your cat goes regularly. This stops them from feeling overheated during hotter spells. Remember to ensure that your cat can get away from the bottle if they chose to, and make sure the bottle does not leak!

Happy Cat Puke Day!

Rosie's sprained hind leg (see last week's post) is almost healed.

To celebrate, she decided to throw up on one of the office chairs that she normally sleeps on when acting as my PA.

Thank you Rosie!

Rosie in The Clothes

Rosie has decided that the newly washed clothes make an ideal bed.

We have left her there, as this morning whilst running around the house she has possibly sprained a muscle on her hind leg.

No swelling, cut, or disjointed bone. She is limping a little, but we will keep an eye on her, and if no sign of improvement will take her to the vet if needs be.

Farewell Bob - The Street Cat

Bob the cat, whose special role in James Bowen's personal journey was written about in bestseller A Street Cat Named Bob, has died, having reached over 14 years of age.

Long credited by Bowen with saving his life, Bob died on Monday (15th June).

Bowen, a recovering addict, first met Bob in 2007 when he found him abandoned and injured. He went on to take care of Bob who in turn gave him a reason to get up each morning. They quickly became inseparable, busking and selling The Big Issue on the streets of London.

In 2012 Hodder & Stoughton published Bowen's first book, A Street Cat Named Bob, telling his and Bob’s story. The book became a bestseller, along with its sequels The World According to Bob, A Gift from Bob and The Little Book of Bob. In all the books sold eight million copies in more than 40 languages, according to Hodder, with Nielsen BookScan recording for the UK sales of 1.29 million books for £8.18m.

The original story was also made into a film released in 2016 starring Luke Treadaway as Bowen. Bob appeared in the film as himself and will appear in a sequel, "A Gift from Bob", later this year.

Hodder released a statement: "As James and Bob continued to find fans all over the world, Bob led an incredible life meeting well-wishers at book signings, travelling the world and coping with feline fame. He was an extraordinary cat who will be greatly missed."

Bowen said: "Bob saved my life. It’s as simple as that. He gave me so much more than companionship. With him at my side, I found a direction and purpose that I’d been missing. The success we achieved together through our books and films was miraculous. He’s met thousands of people, touched millions of lives. There’s never been a cat like him. And never will again.

"I feel like the light has gone out in my life. I will never forget him."
